What Is a Rune Converter?

A rune converter changes Latin letters into approximate characters from historical runic writing systems. Enter text once to compare it in Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, Short-Twig Futhark, Staveless Halsinge Futhark, Medieval Runerow, and Anglo-Saxon Futhorc.

Supported Rune Alphabets

Elder Futhark is the earliest widely attested Germanic rune row. Younger Futhark, including its long-branch and short-twig forms, was used in Viking Age Scandinavia. Anglo-Saxon Futhorc expanded the rune inventory for Old English and Old Frisian. Medieval runes developed later, while the staveless Halsinge forms are represented here with approximate Unicode characters because they do not have a complete standard Unicode set.

The converter works locally in your browser. It does not upload your text or call a translation service.

FAQ

Rune Converter FAQ

Does this translate English into Old Norse?
No. It converts Latin letters into runes; it does not translate the language.
Which rune systems are supported?
Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, Short-Twig, Staveless Halsinge, Medieval, and Anglo-Saxon runes.
Which runes did Vikings use?
Vikings mainly used Younger Futhark. Elder Futhark is from an earlier period.
What happens to numbers?
Digits stay unchanged because these rune systems have no shared modern number mapping.
What happens to punctuation and spaces?
They stay unchanged, including line breaks, quotes, and apostrophes.
Can I enter Old Norse text?
Yes. Results remain approximate because rune choices varied by time and place.
How does Staveless Halsinge work?
It uses the closest available Unicode characters because the full alphabet is not encoded.
Will copied runes work everywhere?
They work in apps with a compatible Unicode font. Other apps may show empty boxes.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Conversion happens in your browser.
