How Do Discord Fonts Work?

Discord lets you use Markdown like **bold** and *italic* inside messages, but your display name, About Me, server name, and channel names only take plain text. The fonts you see there are Unicode characters that look like styled letters. OpenL converts your text into these characters, so the style shows up anywhere Discord shows text.

This page only includes styles that display well on Discord's desktop and mobile apps. Glitch text and other stacked marks are left out because Discord cuts them off in names.

Where You Can Use Them

PlaceWorks?Tip
Display nameYesUp to 32 characters. Bold and small caps stay readable in the member list
Server nicknameYesSet a different styled name for each server
About Me and statusYesStyle a heading or one line, and keep the rest plain
Server and channel namesYesChannel names show lowercase, so small caps and bold sans work best
MessagesYesMarkdown is easier for bold and italic, but these fonts add gothic, bubble, and more
UsernameNoUsernames only allow lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores

Popular Styles for Discord

  • Bold Sans (𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱): the clearest choice for display names and role names.
  • Small Caps (ꜱᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘꜱ): clean and compact, great for channel names.
  • Monospace (𝚖𝚘𝚗𝚘): a coder or retro look.
  • Gothic (𝔤𝔬𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔠): popular for gaming and RPG servers.
  • Bubble (ⓑⓤⓑⓑⓛⓔ): playful, for short words.

Channel and Role Name Templates

Most decorated servers use a symbol and an emoji in front of each channel name, like ꒰💬꒱・general or ┊📢┊announcements. Type a channel name above and the channel templates fill it in, lowercase with dashes, the way Discord saves it. The name templates add frames like ꧁ ꧂ and role prefixes like 👑・ for admins and 🛡️・ for moderators. Copy one, then change the emoji to match your server.

Tips Before You Paste

Styled letters are symbols, not normal letters. Friends can't find you by searching for a styled name, bots and commands may not recognize it, and screen readers may read it letter by letter. Some servers also require readable nicknames, so check the rules first. Every styled letter counts as one character toward the 32-character display name limit.

How to Use OpenL's Discord Fonts

FAQ

Discord Fonts FAQ

Answers about changing fonts on Discord and where styled text works.

How do I change my font on Discord?
Discord has no font setting, but you can paste styled Unicode text. Type your name above, copy a style, then go to User Settings, open Profiles, and paste it into Display Name or About Me.
Can I use a fancy font in my Discord username?
No. Usernames only allow lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores. Use a styled font in your display name or server nickname instead. That's the name most people see.
How do I use a font in a channel name?
Open the channel settings, paste the styled text into Channel Name, and save. Discord changes regular letters to lowercase in channel names, so small caps and bold sans look the most consistent.
Why do some fonts look cut off or show as boxes?
Styles made from stacked marks, like glitch text, get cut off by Discord's line height, so they aren't on this page. Boxes mean the viewer's device doesn't have the character in its font. Bold and italic have the widest support.
Is there a character limit for Discord display names?
Yes, 32 characters. Each styled letter counts as one character, but decorations like the crown or fire add extra characters, so keep decorated names short.
Can I use bold and italic in Discord messages without this tool?
Yes. In messages you can type two asterisks on each side of a word for bold, or one on each side for italic. Use this tool for places Markdown doesn't work, like names and bios, or for styles Markdown can't make.
Are OpenL's Discord fonts free?
Yes. They're free with no sign-up. Your text is converted in your browser and never uploaded.
